Jean Michel Gillard (Bruxelles, Belgio 1975)
Jean-Michel
Gillard was born 1975 in Brussels. By the age of 17, he entered the Royal
Conservatory of his native city where he got several prizes in the areas of
guitar, theory and composition. After completing his studies at the Conservatory,
he was admitted to improve his art at the Queen Elizabeth College of Music (Belgium),
where he graduated 2001 after a three-years-cycle. During and after his studies,
Jean-Michel Gillard has won several composition competitions, both national and
international, amongst which a First Prize at the “Ciutat de Tarragona”
Competition (Spain), 1998, for a poem for orchestra called “Sunrise”,
the First Prize at the “Paolo Barsacchi” Competition in Viareggio (Italy),
2001, for his “Invocations to the Poor’s Virgin” for soprano,
guitar and violoncello and, more recently, a Second Prize ex-equo (1st Prize
being not awarded) at the 4th International Prokofiev Competition in Saint
Petersburg (2003), with a piece for harp, “L’eau vive” (“Spring
water”). Besides this, Jean-Michel Gillard gives lessons and lectures,
and, on March 2003, he was interviewed by the cellist Nicolas Deletaille for the
WKCR-Radio (University of Columbia).
